Honoapiilani Highway

Honoapiilani highway cover much of west Maui.  Ultimately there is really one main road that covers the whole island but the name changes to indicate which part of the island that you're on.  Each of my photos in this set are all taken at the same time but different days.  Also taken at different parts of the island.  I currently do not have any photos of Kahekili Hwy since it's one dangerous road, scary as hell to drive.  It's supposed to be a two lane highway but with the road mergers it becomes one car passing lane.  Next time I'm intrepid enough to drive it I'll take a photo of how close the wheels get to the cliff with no guard rail.  For now enjoy the scenery scenery that is Maui on the highway.

East Maui Road Trip – Part 2

The second half of trip is through the rugged mostly unpaved arid terrain of Maui cow country.  This is where most of the cattle farms are located as there is little vegetation similar to that of the steppe lands in Africa.  It does provide fantastic views of the Pacific ocean and dramatic sky.

Through the years this part of the island has become more and more paved as tourist flock to see this mainly uninhabited part of the island.  10 years ago when I first traversed this area you would hardly see a soul for hours.  Now you will see large vans packed with tourist looking out the window every 10 minutes.  The roads have smoothen out for the most part and what would have taken me at least 6 hours to drive though with patchy dirty road is now newly paved goodness.

If anyone has the time and the energy biking the whole island of Maui is very beautiful and worth while!

Maui Sunset Part 2

On my sunset ritual I spent some time scoping out a location of my next shoot.  Something that would be more dramatic and hopefully more interest than just the sky and the clouds.  Maybe next time I will continue to photograph a sunset at a new bay each night along the west Maui coast.  For now enjoy the Napili Bay's sunset.

While super-storm Sandy was blowing high winds and trying to take down my house I sat in the dark thinking of these photos.  How on west Maui everyday ends with a beautiful sunset.

Day Trip

This was my last full day in Maui and as I mentioned previously I was not able to snorkel, thus, we went to the aquarium.  As it turns it we made a day of traveling around.  We so much driving into so many various parts of central Maui that I wished I spent more time documenting the process.  When you're in the heat of the moment and trying to get to the destination it's hard to see the overall picture.  It would have been fun to see the whole progression of almost driving all the way up to Haleakala.  The family minivan was not able to handle the rugged road too well so we gave up nearly at the end. Maybe next time we'll actually travel on the crater road and head up the into the crater and watch the sunset.  For now enjoy the lowland and the view from above.

Coconut Bonanza

The coconut tree in the backyard can only quenched our thirst for so long.  The family pooled together and went in-land and visited a Hawaiian friend with more than amble quantity of coconuts to go around.

Maui Fruits

My dad has done a great job of planting fruit trees on the property.  Some of them are more experimental than others but thus far he has been very successful at them.  There are many that has impressed me but some are more interesting than others especially the dragon fruit. 2 years ago it was just a bunch of worn out cactus looking plant but now it's thriving with more fruit than we can eat.  The other is the coconut tree that I shall show in the next post.  For now enjoy the fruit that has been the labor of love from my dad.
